Book Description
Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems in Electrical Power Engineering details how intelligent applications can be used in the power industry. The book gives a general and historical overview of intelligent knowledge based systems (IKBS) and artificial intelligence (AI) and a broad analysis of the application of these techniques in the electrical power industry. It includes chapters on forecasting and planning in power systems, design of electrical plant and systems, IKBS in condition monitoring, alarm processing, event and fault diagnosis and an analysis of future trends in IKBS for power engineering. No previous knowledge of IKBS is assumed, but an appreciation of electrical transmission and distribution systems would be useful.

Book Description
The construction of intelligent machines is the primary goal of research in artificial intelligence and knowledge-based systems. This book is designed to introduce the foundations of mathematical and philosophical approaches to this rapidly expanding research area. Foundations of Intelligent Knowledge-Based Systems is divided into three parts. Part I uses logic as a guideline and addresses fundamental theoretical and practical issues in developing large scale intelligent knowledge-based systems (IKBS). PartII discusses modal and intentional logic, nonmonotonic logic, induction and reasoning under uncertainty, and also covers advanced concepts such as planning, actions, states, and temporal systems. Part III looks at the architecture and design principles ofIKBSs using a case study, thus illuminating many of the principles and concepts developed in Parts I and II. This text presents a unified and rigorous study of IKBS theory and application. It is essential reading for advanced undergraduates, graduates, and developers in knowledge-based systems, artificial intelligence, and expert systems. Key Features * Presents a unified and rigorous study of intelligent knowledge-based systems theory and application * Comprehensively addresses computational logic methods and techniques applied to knowledge based systems * Covers the whole field from the most theoretical aspects of logic to the most practical aspects of a case study * Provides exercises at the end of each chapter

Book Description
The annual Kes International Conference in Knowledge-based Intelligent Information Engineering Systems and Allied Technologies has become an event that is held in high regard by the intelligent systems community. The proceedings of the fifth conference represents a comprehensive survey of research on the theory and application of knowledge-based intelligent systems including topics such as: generic intelligent techniques - artificial neural networks, machine learning fuzzy and neuro-fuzzy techniques, and artificial life; applications of intelligent systems - condition monitoring, fault diagnosis, image processing, and high voltage systems; and allied technologies - communications, the Internet and web-based technologies, e-commerce, and computer pets. The proceedings should be of interest to those in the intelligent systems field, such as engineers, researchers and students.

Book Description
This book is a collection of some of the papers that were presented during a NATO Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on "Intelligent Systems: Safety, Reliability and Maintainability Issues" that was held in Kusadasi, Turkey during August 24- 28, 1992. Attendance at this workshop was mainly by invitation only, drawing people internationally representing industry, government and the academic community. Many of the participants were internationally recognized leaders in the topic of the workshop. The purpose of the ARW was to bring together a highly distinguished group of people with the express purpose of debating where the issues of safety, reliability and maintainability place direct and tangible constraints on the development of intelligent systems. As a consequence, one of the major debating points in the ARW was the definition of intelligence, intelligent behaviour and their relation to complex dynamic systems. Two major conclusions evolved from the ARW are: 1. A continued need exists to develop formal, theoretical frameworks for the architecture of such systems, together with a reflection on the concept of intelligence. 2. There is a need to focus greater attention to the role that the human play in controlling intelligent systems. The workshop began by considering the typical features of an intelligent system. The complexity associated with multi-resolutional architectures was then discussed, leading to the identification of a necessity for the use of a combinatorial synthesis/approach. This was followed by a session on human interface issues.

Book Description
First published in 1992, this volume identifies the problems facing the designer of multi-environmental knowledge-based systems, and explains the principles that must be followed in order to obtain successful results. Systems called upon to function in a variety of widely differing cultural and natural environments can only do so satisfactorily if from the very beginning they have been designed with this versatility in mind. For the first time, the know-how for this often formidable design task has been gathered together and presented here. This study was written to an overall plan, with chapters commissioned from a group of research of quite diversified back-grounds who had deeply explored their subjects. Each topic was thus covered in close connection with the others, so as to form a coherent whole. While primarily aimed at workers in Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems, as well as designers of other kinds of sophisticated software, the contents of the book are of wider validity, just as the multi-environmental demands are of wider incidence. Manufactures, exporters and importers of computing technology with a large knowledge component will also find their concerns addressed.
